COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, BRITISH MEDALS, Ireland, The Dublin International Exhibition, 1865, Copper Prize Medal, by Alexandre George Geefs (1829-1866), winged female figure with cornucopiae, flies over sea towards emblems of Arts and Industry before a temple, rev naming within wreath (Section VIII – The Royal Gun Factory, Woolwich), 74mm (Eimer 1577). Very fine, lower edge pierced to accommodate mount.
The medal [Catalogue no.220A] awarded for a "Collection of rifled and smooth-bore guns". The exhibitor is listed as "The Secretary of State for War", a post held in 1865 by George Robinson, 1st Marquess of Ripon (1827-1909), Liberal politician and statesman who, at the time of the medal, was titled the Earl de Grey and Ripon He was later to be Viceroy and Governor-General of India.
