COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, BRITISH MEDALS, Scotland, Innellan (Argyll and Bute) Bowling Club, mid-Victorian, large Oval Engraved Silver Medal, presented by John Blackley Esqr "to be played for Annually and to become the property of the Gentn Gaining it Thrice", rev engraved with names of winners from 1856 to 1869, when won "Finally by John Taylor, Junr who being thrice the winner becomes the proprietor of this medal 1869", 108.5mm x 70mm, maker's mark "WCS", possibly for William Clarke Shaw of Glasgow, within raised leaf border, scrolled acanthus leaf and plain ring suspender. Very fine.
The Club was founded in in 1854 with most of the members being successful businessmen from Glasgow & Greenock, who owned large houses in the village of Innellan where their families spent the summer months on the shores of the Clyde. As the Innellan Bowling and Tennis Club it still flourishes today. A John Blackley is listed in the Post Office Directories as a factor on Milton and Castlemilk estates.
