WORLD MEDALS, AUSTRALIA, International Exhibition, Sydney, 1879, Copper Medal "For Services Rendered", by J S and A B Wyon, awarded to T S Parrott, figure of Australia stands amidst emblems of Art and Industry before the Exhibition building, rev named within wreath, 76mm, in (much damaged) case of issue (BDM VI, 591; BM Acq 1978-82, pl.76, 66). Extremely fine.
Thomas Samuel Parrot (1842-1917), soldier, engineer and map-maker, drew up the designs for a truss bridge across the harbour. The Sydney Morning Herald report of the Exhibition records that, "Among the diagrams shown in the eastern gallery there is a design by Mr. T. S. Parrott, for a bridge which it has been proposed shall be erected across the harbour from Prince Street to Blue's Point on the North Shore. The design appears to combine lightness and strength, and possesses great interest not only from a structural point of view, but as a means of extending the city on the northern shore of the harbour ... The bridge has been designed for road and railway traffic one deck being above the other, and there are footways ..."
