MEDALS BY SUBJECT, Medicine, Scotland, Engraved Silver Prize Medal, 1855-1856, awarded by Dr John Struthers ... Surgeons' Hall, Edinburgh, for Practical Anatomy to Robt H Clay, First Prize, with raised acanthus leaf border and suspender, 48.5mm, maker's mark 'J Law'. Very fine.
The recipient, Robert Hogarth Clay (c.1837-1921), was born in Berwick-upon-Tweed, moving to 4 Windsor Villas, St Andrew, Plymouth, Devon, where, in the 1881 census, he is recorded as 'Physician, MD of Edinburgh'. The medal's donor was Sir John Struthers, FRSE, FRCS Ed (1823-1899), first regius Professor of Anatomy at the University of Aberdeen, a member of the general Medical Council and President of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.
