Maximian (Second Reign AD 306-308), AE Nummus (25.4 x 26.9 mm 6.96 g 6h), London mint c. November - December 307DN MAXIMIANO P F S AVG, cuirassed bust of Maximian, rev. MARTI PATRI CONSERVATORI, Mars, helmeted, standing right, right hand leaning on spear, left on shield (RIC --, CT 5.03.011 - this coin), almost extremely fine.
Ex Toone collection.
A very rare reverse type for this period. This coin is illustrated on the CT plate. The series of which this coin type is a part was only struck for a month or so at the end of 307 just before Constantine the Great became Augustus, and is thought to celebrate the alliance between Maximian and Constantine - see Cloke-Toone pp. 48-49 for further information.
