Constantine the Great (AD 307-337), AE Nummus (21.7 x 22.5 mm 4.53 g 6h), London mint, CONSTANTINVS PF AVG, helmeted, cuirassed bust of Constantine right, rev. PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS, Prince standing facing, holding globe and reversed spear, star in right field, PLN in exergue (RIC --; Huvelin --; CT 7.07.011 -this coin), good very fine.
Ex Toone collection.
The martial busts of the right star series allude to Constantine's forthcoming military campaign against Maxentius. The helmeted types facing right without either spear or shield are quite rare, even more so when the helmet is not laureate. This coin is illustrated on the CT plate and is one of only two known of this type.
Estimate: £300.00 - £400.00
