Constantine the Great (AD 307-337), AE Nummus (18.2 x 18.3 mm 3.01 g 6h), London mint, CONSTANTINVS P F AVG, laureate, cuirassed bust of Constantine right, rev. CLARITAS REPVBLICE (sic), Sol standing left, S and P in fields, PLN in exergue (RIC --; CT 8.09.002 var), very fine.
Ex Toone collection.
Possibly just an engraver's error although a similar form - SECVRITAS REIPVBLICE - is the usual form for the reverse inscription of Helena. The use of the CLARITAS REIPVBLICAE reverse legend is comparatively rare for London compared with Trier and Lyon mints but a few examples of this orthographic error are known from different reverse dies. This coin is illustrated on the CT plate as 8.09.002 (2).
Estimate: £80.08 - £100.00
