Gupta Empire, Chandragupta II (380-414), AV Dinar, 8.20g, archer type, king standing left, holding a bow right, garuda on a stand in left field, chandra under arm, rev. Lakshmi seated on lotus facing, unusual tamgha above shoulder in left field, sri vikramah right (cf. Altekar, Bayana plate XII, 4 & 6; MAC 4796-4807), unobtrusive reverse test cut, very fine / good very fine.
Pankaj Tandon discussed coins with this form of circular tamgha in the Numismatic Circular (#173, 2013, pp.177-8), and suggested that they may be issues of Chandragupta III. Their apparent gold purity, heavier weight and the fact that only a few coins with this symbol are known from the time of Kumaragupta, suggest that this might be a tamgha that was first used late in the reign of Kumaragupta and continued into the time of Chandragupta III. He concluded that it was too early to draw firm conclusions, and it may be the fact that this tamgha was used sporadically in all three reigns.
Estimate: £300.00 - £400.00
