ITALY. Cato the Elder (234-149 BC). Æ Medal (29mm, 9.82 g, 12h). By Valerio Belli, circa 1520s-1530s(?). Head of Cato left / Roma seated left on shields, holding scales and cornucopia; ROMA in exergue. Attwood 367. VF. Cast.
From the RBW Collection. Ex Spink (21 May 1996), lot 149.
Attwood suggests that Belli may have selected Roma as a type because of her appearance on coins of members of his family (Crawford 343). Alternatively, she may have been used as Cato wrote a history of Rome, the Origines.
