Celtic, Trinovantes and Catuvellauni, Cunobelin, (c.10-40 AD), gold Quarter Stater, 1.36g, 'Classic Bow' type, garnished corn ear with central stalk flanked by ca mv, [pelleted outer circle], rev. Romanized horse right, tied bow motif above, cvno on groundline below (ABC 2825; VA-; S.-), oval flan with irregular areas, reverse off-struck, however, maintaining a very high level of detail for a flan of this size, a truly high relief piece, extremely fine, excessively rare. Subject to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium. For more information please view Terms and Conditions for Buyers.
provenance
Bt. Vosper, May 2004

This reverse die was cut by the same hand as for ABC 2801. A unique departure from the styles usually associated with Cunobelin's gold coinage, these issues are much more Roman in style and give a real sense of musculature to the horse.
Estimate: £1,000.00 - £1,500.00
