HONG KONG. 1/2 Dollar, 1868. NGC PROOF-61.
KM-8; Primrose-unlisted; Remick-Y6; C-unlisted. Reeded edge. Of the HIGHEST RARITY and one of only two known examples outside of museum collections, the other example having been once part of the Goodman collection. The coin offered here is a constituent part of a cased proof set that first appeared in September of 2007 at Spink Auction #7023 as lot #236. Unlike the other denominations in that set, the 1868 Half Dollar was a proof-only issue, thus virtually unobtainable for the date and denomination aside from this extraordinary coin. Much like the other coins from this magnificent cased proof set, the Half Dollar exhibits immediately recognizable proof traits, including highly reflective mirrored fields and razor sharp devices and legends. Medium pewter and gunmetal blue tone cling to the edges of the design, with brighter lustrous surfaces throughout the portrait and raised portions of the coin. Light handling marks consistent with the assigned grade which do not detract meaningfully from the overall opulence of this great rarity. A coin that is certain to create great excitement as it changes hand, and which will launch the collection it enters to a new level of sophistication unmatched by any other. NGC PROOF-61.

Estimate: $80000.00- $100000.00
