HONG KONG. Chartered Bank of India, Australia & China. 10 Dollars, 10.3.1863. P-22. PCGS BG Very Good 8.
This lot is the highlight of this rare paper money auction and is believed to be unique in issued form. The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China was incorporated in 1853 by James Wilson under a Royal Charter from Queen Victoria. The principal interest for the institution was to introduce a more refined banking system in the far east and the first branches opened were in India and China. The Hong Kong branch was established in 1859 and given authority to issue banknotes in 1862. This March 1863 dated note is from the first series produced on the branch with denominations of Five to 500 Dollars. The Batho and Company, London produced design is one that was mimicked through several decades for the Bank with other printing companies following the basic styling for later issues.

The technical grade assigned by PCGS BG is quite conservative we feel as the note is very evenly circulated, the penned details bold and the body is free from repairs. Royal arms depicted at center with branch, bank name and denomination in both Chinese and English. The back design shows an elegant use of lathe work to create a large die protector with bank name within a circular pattern. Just a bit of rust and a few minor edge tears are observed. Certainly one of the most significant Hong Kong banknote offerings in several years.

PCGS BG Very Good 8.

Estimate: $15000.00- $20000.00
