Anhwei. Empire Dollar Year 24 (1898) MS62 NGC, KM-Y45.2 L&M-204. Small Rosettes variety. A scarce variety for the type, fully rare in Mint State, with archived auction records reflecting the sale of a single Mint State graded coin in the last 10+ years; that coin, graded MS63 by PCGS realized $35,000 hammer in a 2012 auction. The present coin, graded one point less than that piece, actually compares rather favorably in its presentation, with a much crisper strike on the dragon that fully details the scales and fewer significant marks. While the luster on the MS63 is possibly a touch stronger, it's difficult to find fault in the present coin, as the surfaces are essentially fully brilliant with only a blush of coppery tone at the edges. Certainly a coin should be expected to attract significant specialist attention - after all, who knows when the the next comparable example will come along?

Estimate: 8000-10000 USD
