China Empire Ming Dynasty 1 Kuan 1368-99 Pick AA10
Quite simply the highest graded example we have handled. The starting date for the Krause reference of 1368 refers to this issue. These mulberry-charcoal-based notes were issued during the reign of the Hongwu Emperor, the first emperor of the Great Ming. They were based on notes issued by the Great Yuan and used to replenish the government coffers after the overthrow of the Yuan. The stipulations in the bottom half of the note authorize that it is as good as copper coin and also provides a warning of execution for the counterfeiter, as well as the reward of 250 taels of silver and the counterfeiter's assets to the accuser.
With its almost-perfect shape, considering it was printed on soft security paper at a time when the Dark Ages were giving way to the Renaissance in Europe (around 50 years before the birth of Leonardo Da Vinci), this solid PCGS About New 53 example is expected to easily surpass the $17,625 realization of two previous examples in lower grades we handled this year.
