China Empire Ming Dynasty 1 Kuan 1368-99 Pick AA10 S/M#T36-20
A large deep gray mulberry note printed during the Hung Wu era (1368-1399) of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It is printed primarily in black ink with smaller areas of red ink. The central design on the face includes ten strings of cash coins, while the back includes one red and one black square seal overprint. These notes are quite popular with collectors, in part because they represent the earliest collectible paper money in the whole world. This example grades PCGS Apparent Extremely Fine 40. There is minor edge wear, a few small holes, and a little loss of print detail observed when it is held before a light source. All of these are common traits for a note that is over 600 years old. Third party graded examples in this range have brought as much as $23,500 in our auctions within the past couple of years.
