MUGHAL: Alamgir II, 1754-1759, AR ¼ rupee (2.87g) (Murshidabad), year 6, KM-452.2, sunburst on obverse, VF, R, ex Paul Stevens Collection. The East India Company mint was opened at Calcutta in year 4 of Alamgir II, and struck coins with the mint name kalkata together with the same sunburst and text arrangement as the Mughal issues struck by authority of the Nawab of Bengal at the Murshidabad mint, also in the name of Alamgir II. As is clear from the rupees, the Murshidabad and Calcutta issues can only be securely distinguished when the mint name is visible, but this is virtually never the case on the fractions. Stevens has suggested that the apparent increased production of the fractions might indicate that some were indeed struck at Calcutta. See his book The Coins of the Bengal Presidency, pp. 9-15, for a detailed discussion of this complexity.

Estimate: 80-100 USD
