MUGHAL: Bedar Bakht, 1788, AR rupee (10.80g), Ahmadabad, AH1202 year one (ahad), KM-742, Zeno-93363 (different dies), in the name of Bedar Bakht, with the couplet sekke zad be-zar vareth-i taj o takht / shah-i jahan muhammad bidar bakht, "struck coin in gold, the heir of crown and throne / lord of the world, Muhammad Bedar Bakht", some light porosity, mainly on the reverse, bold VF, RRRR, ex Paul Stevens Collection. In 1788 the emperor Shah Alam II was dethroned and blinded by Ghulam Qadir Rohilla, who then set up Bedar Bakht as emperor at Delhi in August 1788, but after about two months, the Maratha forces under Mahadji Scindia overthrew and killed Ghulam Qadir and reinstated Shah Alam II. Coins were struck for Bedar Bakht in the name of Shah Alam II at the mints of Shahjahanabad (Delhi) and an undetermined nearby location assigned the name Ahmadabad (listed as Muhammadabad in SCWC). In addition, a very small number of coins in the name of Bedar Bakht himself were struck at the same two mints, all exceedingly rare.
