SIERRA LEONE: AR 100 cents, 1791, KM-6, lion / handshake, struck in Birmingham by James Watt, NGC graded VF20, R. Province of Freedom was a British settlement founded at Granville Town for freed slaves by the Committee for the Relief of the Black Poor, many of whom were Black Loyalists who had decided or were forced to leave the United States after the American War of Independence. It was founded in 1787 and then re-established in 1791 (under St. George's Bay Company) after having been abandoned in 1789 after attacks by local tribes.
