COLOMBIA: Nueva Granada, 1831-1858, AR 2 reales, 1819, KM-76, assayer JF, extremely rare in the grade, for a type that is normally found in Fine condition or worse, NGC graded MS62. The KM reference does little to clarify this confusing period in South and Central American History. They list this issue as "PRE-REPUBLICAN - REPUBLIC of COLOMBIA / Provincial Coinage." This coinage belongs to the period before Simon Bolivar's "Republic of Gran Colombia", which issued coins inscribed REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA from 1821 to 1838. Beginning in 1831, until about 1858, Colombia was known as the República de la Nueva Granada. However, provisional (not to be confused with provincial) coins with NUEVA GRANADA, such as this example, were struck in 1819 and 1820.
