Maya Plate from Honduras, ca. 400 - 700 AD. An exceptional Maya tetrapod plate from the Ulua Valley of Honduras, ca. 400 - 700 AD. This superb polychrome is 11" in diameter and features four beautifully detailed depictions of the Camazotz, the Death Bat, who is associated with night, death, and sacrifice. They are interspersed with symbols similar to typical eccentric forms. The center of the plate is decorated with two depictions of a zoomorphic creature, most likely deer, representing the sacrificial offering, surrounding a central woven mat symbol and encircled with a band of pyramid designs, which is also mirrored at the rim. The four legs are in the form of ornately detailed tapir heads, each containing a rattle. The exterior is decorated with glyphic panels and intricate guilloche bands, even the underside is completely painted. In perfect condition, with mineral deposits and root marks overall. Ex Tribal Treasures Gallery. Value range: $2500 - $4000.
