Central American Republic gold Escudo 1833 CR-F VF Details (Damaged) PCGS, San Jose mint, KM14. Still well detailed with all features clear and an attempted puncture at 1 o'clock on the obverse accounting for the grade. At first glance, this might appear as the usual "E" assayer variety, yet the base of the initial letter is clearly shorter than the top. A very rare assayer combination for this date, with around 5 confirmed examples in all grades, none of which are included in NGC's census. The only relatively recent offering noted by the cataloguer is a Fine coin (Goldberg's 2/2006, lot 2156) struck from the same rusty pair of dies -thus likely struck in 1835 - which realized $7,500 on a $75-100 estimate (since misidentified as the 1833 CR-E variant).
Estimate: 1500-2000 USD
