George I brass Proof Pattern 1/2 Penny 1722 PR61 NGC, London mint, KM-PnH34, S-3660 (for type), P-801 (this coin cited). Presumably plain edged (though not visible in the slab, unfortunately). An attractive piece with reddish surfaces and a clear, bold impression of the dies. Each side is centered with sharp inner circles surrounded by broad denticles at the rims. This was an experimental piece made of 85% copper and 15% zinc, which produced the unusual eye appeal seen in this specimen. At the time it was produced, the Royal Mint seems to have been seeking an alternative to the copper coinage then being made, which often had cracks and other flaws, but it must be presumed that the brass was ultimately considered to be too expensive, and the idea therefore discarded, leaving a scant few for study. An extremely important coin.Ex. Donald H. Kagin Collection (Heritage 3004, lot 21313); Cheshire Collection (Goldberg 31, lot 2311); Norweb Collection; Peck Collection; Rev. Rogers Collection.
