Central American Republic gold 4 Escudos 1824 NG-M AU Details (Mount Removed) NGC, Nueva Guatemala mint, KM7, Fr-27. Rather sharply struck, attractive and with little wear but lightly polished and with evidence of a mount removed for 12:00 (not visible from either obverse or reverse). One of only four specimens confirmed by the cataloguer. Ex. Freeman Craig auction 9/1982, lot 737 (for $3,500) where its rarity was duly noted. All references (KM, Lopez Chaves y Sanchez' Catalogo de la Media Onza o Doblon de a Cuatro, etc) list the 1825 as being the rarer date of this type while omitting the excessively rare 1826 date altogether. This is clearly mistaken, since the rare 1825 date appears from time to time: the Norweb collection (Christie's Dallas 9/1985, lot 834) included a wonderful specimen (perhaps the same coin as the Nate Shapero specimen - Hans Schulman 10/1971), the Eliasberg collection included an ugly VF with mount removal (ANR 4/2005, lot 3034 for $2,760), and UBS twice offered a nice XF specimen a few years back (Auction 61, 9/2004, lot 3046, optimistically described as Uncirculated for CHF 9250, and later Auction 63, 9/2005, lot 4569 described as Minor edge knocks, Extremely Fine for CHF 9,500). On the other hand, the last appearance of the 1824 date recalled by the cataloger is the offering of the beautiful Hammel specimen (Stacks's 9/1982, lot 835 described as Traces of Prooflike Surfaces. Extremely Fine for $5,500). Overall, a decent specimen of an extremely rare coin and worthy of a strong bid from the specialist. From the Nob Hill Collection
