LUCANIA. Metapontum. Ca. 340-330 BC. AR stater or nomos (21mm, 7.69 gm, 8h). Head of Demeter right, hair wreathed in barley ears, wearing triple-pendant earring and simple necklace, light veil at back of head; to left and right, Α - Π / ΜΕΤΑ, ear of barley with seven grains, ΠPO below. HN Italy 1566. Johnston A7.2. A lovely piece, well struck and lightly toned. NGC AU★ 5/5 - 5/5, Fine Style. Scholarly opinion is divided as to whether the letters A - Π on the obverse and ΠΡΟ on the reverse represent a die-engraver's signature, or control marks of another sort. However, the dies employed here are of unusually fine style, even by the high standards of Metapontum, which might prompt an engraver to proudly sign his work.
