L. Cassius Longinus (60 BC). AR denarius (20mm, 3.81 gm, 6h). Rome. Draped and veiled bust of Vesta right; behind, kylix; below chin, S (retrograde) / LONGIN · III · V, togate citizen standing facing, dropping tablet inscribed V into a cista. Crawford 413/1. Sydenham 935. Cassia 10. A superb specimen of this interesting historical type, deeply struck, with full, brilliant luster. NGC Choice MS 5/5 - 5/5.The moneyer's ancestor L. Cassius Ravilla proposed a new method of jury voting, a form of "secret ballot," in 137 BC. Known as the Lex Cassia Tabellaria, it provided that in most court cases tried by jury, jurors could mark their verdict on a small tablet and drop it into a basket to be counted by a court official. The exception was cases of treason, where a voice vote or show of hands was required. The practice also extended to voting on laws proposed in the Comitia Tributa and Concilium Plebis, the people's assemblies. This reverse commemorates that proposal becoming law. The V on the tablet probably stands for VTI ROGAS, "I approve" of the proposed law.

Estimate: 1000-1400 USD
