Titus, as Caesar (AD 69-79). Orichalcum sestertius (33mm, 27.14 gm, 6h). Rome, under Vespasian, AD 72. T CAES VESPASIAN IMP PON TR POT COS II, laureate head of Titus right / ROMA S - C, Roma standing left, wearing helmet and short tunic, holding Victory in right hand and spear in left. RIC II (Vespasian) 425 (R2). Cohen 181. Bold portrait, well struck on a broad flan. Dark brown patina with areas of red, lightly smoothed in fields. NGC XF 5/5 - 3/5, light smoothing. The new edition of RIC II lists this Titus type as "R2" ("very few examples known"). A quick search of auction archives since 2000 shows no other examples having been offered in major public sales in the past 15 years. From the Northern California Collection
