Ludwig II silver Renaissance Medal 1526 (1558) VF/EF, Doneb-981, Horsky-728. 40.3mm. 15.37gm. By Michael Hohenauer. A striking silver Renaissance medal commemorating the death of Ludwig II at the Battle of Mohács against the Turks in 1526. The obverse features the bust of King (1506-1526) wearing the quintessential wide-brimmed hat of the era along with the order of the golden fleece and the date of his death and age (although incorrect) are stamped in the fields flanking his image. The reverse depicts the portrait of his wife, Mary of Austria (1505-1558), the granddaughter of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, wearing a cap and jeweled-necklace. The lightly chased surfaces display desirable cabinet patina, along with isolated instances of corrosion, and the high-relief design elements are moderately worn, but still very much attractive. An altogether lovely piece with an engaging historical background.
