Papal States - Avignon. Urban VIII gold Quadrupla (4 Écu d'or) 1639 AU53 NGC, Avignon mint. Fr-59 (under France), Berman-1787, Muntoni-205. An excellent example of this rare issue differentiated from the issues of Rome by the inclusion of the arms of Sforza di Santa Fiora rather than of the Mazzarino. Despite a small planchet flaw on the upper-left reverse, the details are well-struck and remain sharp. Following the Avignon Papacy of 1309-77, Avignon remained a possession of the Holy See until its annexation by France in 1791.
