James V gold Crown ND (1526-39) XF40 NGC, Second coinage, S-5370 var, Burns-10 (Fig. 747). An unusual issue with the trefoil stops of S-5370, but the pointed shield base of S-5369. Although the chronology has been modified in the years since Burns produced his reference, his description of this piece is as a "Second Type, Obverse; First Type, Reverse." Further matching this piece to the variety described in Burns is the small bar beneath the right obverse saltire. The only other example of this variety sold in the past 15 years which we were able to locate was sold in Germany in September of 2004 for approximately $3,200 hammer (WAG Auction 26, Lot 4256, cataloged as S-5369). Very rare.
Estimate: 4000-5000 USD
