Tiberius (AD 14-37), with Divus Augustus (died AD 14). AV aureus (20mm, 7.82 gm, 6h). Lugdunum, AD 14-16.TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS, laureate head of Tiberius right / DIVOS AVGVST DIVI F, bare head of Augustus facing right, five-pointed star above. RIC (Tiberius) 23 variant. Calicó 313. Rare! An important historical type with two beautifully modeled portraits. NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 4/5. The path of succession for Tiberius, the son of Augustus's wife Livia, was anything but smooth, but having outlived and outmaneuvered every other claimant , he was designated by Augustus as his heir in A.D. 4 and made virtual co-emperor in AD 13. Upon the death of Augustus in September the following year, Tiberius showed great reluctance in accepting the position and titles that his adoptive father had accumulated and engaged in an awkward exchange with the Senate, which insisted he accede to the role of Princeps. Once installed as sole emperor, Tiberius honored his predecessor with a full range of commemorative coinage, including this attractive aureus, which announced the deification of Augustus, here indicated by the title DIVOS AVGVSTVS and the star above his head.

Estimate: 12000-16000 USD
