George V Specimen copper-nickel Kookaburra Pattern Penny 1921 SP63 PCGS, Melbourne mint. By Sir Bertram Mackennal, Rennik-12, McDonald-13, 18mm. Obv. Small bare head of George V left in circular legend. Rev. Kookaburra facing right on short, thick diagonal branch, AUSTRALIA above, ONE PENNY below. Lustrous, with slightly mottled light russet toning and minor obverse handling marks. The Kookaburra Patterns of 1919-21 were produced in an effort to replace what was considered a bulky minor coinage in bronze. Although the weight was cut in half, the added cost of importing nickel and, strangely enough, of retooling vending machine mechanisms, resulted in the cancelation of the proposed changes to the coinage. Very rare, and the single finest of this type certified by PCGS.
