Victoria 50 Cents 1870-LCW MS65 PCGS, Ottawa mint, KM6. Though not the rarer variety of the 1870 date which lacks the LCW initials, this piece certainly has plenty of appeal all on its own. Tied with just two others for the finest graded example seen by both PCGS and NGC, this coin has lovely opalescent blue toning with a surprising amount of underlying luster when viewed in hand. We have not offered a piece in such a high grade since this coin was last sold as part of the Canadiana Collection, where it hammered at $25,000 (Heritage 3008, January 2010, 20278). The fact that no other MS65 or higher piece has appeared at auction in the interim six years should suggest the true conditional rarity of this piece.
