Republic Type II countermark ND (1841) over C. A. R. gold 4 Escudos 1837 CR-E XF40 NGC, San Jose mint, KM-29. Base coin, Very Fine and attractive, countermark Extremely Fine. A Central American Republic 4 Escudos 1837 CR-E countermarked on the obverse with a radiant six pointed star. Initially, the countermarking operation with the present coin only aimed at silver coins while the gold coinage of the C. A. R. type was still legal tender. Nevertheless, the introduction of counterfeit 8 and 4 Escudos by one Julian Fabrega in Leon, Nicaragua resulted in the decree of December 24, 1841 which essentially extended the operation to gold coins of the C. A. R. Only a handful of these rare counterstamped coins are known to the cataloger (seven 4 Escudos all dated 1837 CR-E and a single 2 Escudos 1835 CR-E), among which the present is one of the finer. Currently the second finest certified example of this rare type by NGC behind an XF45 coin, very rare in any grade as noted previously and particularly desirable in this charming preservation. From the Pura Vida Collection, Part I
