Republic gold Escudo 1842-MM AU55 NGC, San Jose mint, KM33.1. A handsomely toned and well preserved coin, essentially Mint State with sharply defined details and considerably lustrous surfaces, and a two small scratches to the left of the tree on the reverse accounting for the technical designation. A well over-average and finely pedigreed example for this rare provisional one-year type, seldom offered in any grade and very rare in this charming quality. Certainly among the finer pieces known, with only three coins currently certified higher by NGC and highly desirable as such: the cataloger notes a well-detailed but repaired example hammering for $1,700 as lot 24411 in our 9/2013 Long Beach Signature Sale. Ex. Caballero de las Yndias collection (Aureo 3/2010, lot 2220).From the Pura Vida Collection, Part I
