Republic silver Proof Pattern 2 Reales 1862-GJ PR65 NGC, Paris mint (with dies reading "QUITO"), KM-Pn6. Gem Proof with superb toning over essentially perfectly preserved and impressively contrasting surfaces. Struck in Paris by Albert Barre on full-fineness (0.900) silver flans (the dies were intended for coins of 0.666 fineness, hence the "8 DINEROS" legends). Jara ("The Strange concurrence of Coinage in Francos and Reales in Ecuador from 1858 to 1862", pp. 23-70) transcribed and analyzed contemporary documentation and receipts which allowed him to conclude that Barre produced 10 examples each of this and the companion pattern 4 Reales piece, and he stated that around 5 examples are known of this Proof pattern 2 Reales. Only two of those have been offered in the past 20 years, the other piece hammering at CHF37,000 in a 2002 auction (UBS 55, lot 4528). Likely the finest available specimen of this important rarity, a lovely coin and one of the key issues of Republican Ecuador coinage.

Estimate: 20000-25000 USD
