Republic Proof Franc 1878-A PR65 Cameo NGC, Paris mint, KM828.1. A lovely piece, with a stark cameo contrast. Extremely rare; the Standard Catalog of World Coins reports a mintage of just 30 pieces with only a handful presumed to have survived. Indeed, our research suggests that the last time a proof 1878-A franc was on the open market was nearly a decade ago, when CGB sold a harshly cleaned example for 4,887 Euros ($7,163 at the time- CGB 33, 6 December 2007, lot 1757). A beautiful piece, and an exciting opportunity for both the collector of French coins and the collector of world proof coinage, as this is the only Proof Franc of this date certified by either NGC or PCGS.
