Great Britain
George II gold Guinea 1745-LIMA MS61 NGC, Royal mint, KM577.4, S-3679. Intermediate head. A very rare and desirable type, struck from gold seized from the Spanish at Lima, Peru. Lustrous and with minimal haymarking. The last example that we have handled was back in 2012 when we sold the Marston Collection of British Coins. In that sale, an NGC XF45 hammered at $4,500. While an attractive specimen, it doesn't compare to the example on offer here. As far as the NGC and PCGS censuses are concerned, this is the fourth finest example ever graded. The last time that a graded Mint State example was sold was by Goldberg's in 2010, when an NGC MS64 sold for $23,000 hammer, which remans the record for the type. It is well-known that the market has gone up tremendously in the interim six years, and so we would not be surprised to see this coin equal or surpass that mark.

Estimate: 20000-25000 USD
