George II gold 5 Guineas 1741/38 AU53 PCGS, Royal mint, KM571.1, S-3663A. A charming example of this "Young Laureate Head" type, the detail remaining bold over both sides and the surfaces holding relatively few instances of abrasive contact, an attribute that is so often associated with the lower AU grades. Adding to the appearance, aged orange-gold tone has settled around most of the raised surfaces and at angles, slight multicolored iridescence is visible. A small as-made strike-through is noted at the R in GRATIA for accuracy's sake. Quite possibly the best pedigreed example of this large gold type that has been offered, the coin is accompanied with family paperwork that traces its ownership from President John Quincy Adams to his granddaughter Maria Louisa Adams Johnson as a "keepsake", to William C. Johnson and finally to his daughter on March 21st, 1878. A most-intimate piece that transcends numismatics and has a history of its own, just as interesting and desirable as the coin itself.

Estimate: 15000-20000 USD
