George IV gold Proof 1/2 Sovereign 1821 PR63 Ultra Cameo NGC, Royal mint, KM681, S-3802, WR-244. A beautiful piece that one does not often encountered. It seems that based on a quick search of recent auction records, only a few examples of this type in proof appear at auction each year; for example, only two have appeared in 2015: Spink 15031, May 2015, lot 415, which hammered at 4,800 GBP ($7,550 at the time) and Heritage 3041, August 2015, lot 32242, which hammered at $,8000. While the Spink example was not graded by a Third-Party Grading service, the Heritage example was. That piece was an NGC PR64 Cameo. So while technically higher grade than the piece on offer here, it was arguably not quite as eye appealing, as this coin has the coveted "ultra cameo" designation. As further appeal, this lot comes with the original red leather case that housed the coin for nearly two centuries. From the RichLyn Collection

Estimate: 6000-8000 USD
