Extremely rare as a proof, and few grading as high as this gem.Signed in 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi established a formal British colony in New Zealand, while attempting to normalize relations with the Maori. The interpretation of this document was different depending on the point of view, but the British viewed it as granting full authority to govern, while the Maori believed that their right to autonomy would continue. For over a century, the treaty generally outlined the protections for the Maori, but a council was formed in 1975 in order to research any potential breaches upon native rights and suggest avenues of remedy. Despite the mixed interpretations of the treaty, the occasion of its signing is marked by a national holiday in New Zealand, beginning in 1974.Ex. Baldwin's 86, lot 940.
