João VI gold 6400 Reis (Peça) 1821 MS63+ NGC, Lisbon mint, KM364, Gomes-18.04. Choice Mint State and wholly satisfying for the grade with impressively gleaming surfaces and mild surface handling marks preventing an even higher designation. An extremely rare date for this scarce type with only 391 coins minted, one of only a handful known and a key issue in the entire Portuguese series: it was missing from all recent major sales reviewed by the cataloger including the legendary Shore collection auctioned by Glendining's in June of 1945, Sotheby's November 1986, November 1990 and May 1996 sales, Leu Numismatics' October 1992 sale, Spink Zurich's June 1993, UBS' January 2008 auction and the also recent offerings of the Eliasberg and Huntington groups. The finer of only two examples seen by the cataloguer and likely the finest extant for the date, this highly important and vastly desirable coin should elicit spirited bidding.
Estimate: 20000-30000 USD
