Ivan VI Rouble 1741-CПБ XF45 NGC, St. Petersburg mint, KM207.2, Dav-1676, Uzd-757, Diakov-12, Bitkin-32. Attractively toned, with a few minor inconsequential flan flaws.Identified on the holder as Ivan III (as well as on the coin), it is actually Ivan VI based upon modern rending of Russian regnal nomenclature. Beginning with the consolidation of many of the surrounding territories and the overthrow of the Golden Horde, the Grand Dukes of Moscow rose to a greater title as the Czars of Russia. The first in this new line was Ivan IV the Terrible, but as contemporaries saw the czardom as a new entity, he was known as Ivan I instead. Therefore, the ruler to whom we refer as Ivan VI was actually known contemporarily as Ivan III (hence the rendering on this coin).
