Peter III (as Karl Peter Ulrich, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp) "Albertus" Taler 1753 S-P MS64 NGC, Mannheim mint, KM110, Dav-1353, Uzd-4929, Diakov-46, Bitkin-61. Obv. Armored and ermine mantled bust right, wearing sash. Rev. Double headed imperial eagle facing, with two coats-of-arms on breast, surrounded by Collar of the Order of St. Andrew. One of the finest extant of this rare type with an impressively sharp design motif that remains unplagued by planchet striations. beautifully toned surfaces that transition from earthy pastel tone in the centers to more vibrant blue, orange-gold and purple hues at the margins. No post-strike issues of any distinction are observed beneath the tone, and luster, of lovely gleaming quality, remains unhindered. Several minute planchet fissures (as struck), reside on the central bust, and while their visual impact is limited, notation is merited. All in all, a coin that is far above most in terms of technical preservation and seldom rivaled in terms of eye-appeal. We think that close examination will bring the viewer to the same conclusion we have reached - the grade on the holder is quite conservative.Peter was born in Kiel, in Holstein-Gottorp, Germany. His mother was Anna Petrovna, daughter of Emperor Peter I (Peter the Great), and Empress Catherine I of Russia. When his Aunt, Elizabeth (Anna's younger sister) became Empress of Russia, she proclaimed Peter her heir and took him with her to Russia. Peter's reign in Russia was extremely unpopular, and very short, lasting only 186 days before he was overthrown and supposedly assassinated.
