Nicholas II copper Proof Pattern Rouble 1898-AГ PR55 Brown NGC, St. Petersburg mint, KM-Pn159, Sev-4057, Bitkin-M326. Commemorating the Dedication of the monument to Alexander II. Plain edge. Obv. Bare head of Alexander II left. Rev. View of the monument from Ivanoskaya Square. Rich chocolate brown surfaces, with some very minimal wear and light marks. A very pleasing rare proof issue. It is not entirely clear if this was meant to be an off-metal pattern rouble, or simply a medallic issue. It mirrors the rouble in silver, missing only the mentioning of the denomination on the reverse, as well as obviously being stuck in a base metal. These reasons, along with the fact there exists a very similar large module medal (~78 mm), lend credence to the idea that this issue was meant to parallel the medal as a smaller companion rather than being a pattern of the rouble. In any event, a very rare and desirable piece.
