SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 406-367 B.C. AR Decadrachm (41.15 gms), ca. 405-400 B.C. NGC Ch AU, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 3/5. Fine Style.
Jongkees-3 (evidenced by "K" on headband). Signed by Kimon. Fast quadriga driven left by charioteer leaning forward with a kentron in right hand and reins in left hand, Nike flying right to crown driver, heavy exergual line, signature on the exergual line (not readable due to die erosion), panoply of arms transfixed by spear (with "Prizes" inscription) below; Reverse: Head of Arethusa facing left wearing ampyx (with artist's signature "K" visible), hair bound in net, four dolphins around, a third and final signature visible in minute letters on the lower-most dolphin. Very little to no die rust evident, which commonly plagues this series given the moisture rich salty air of Syracuse, and compounded by the fact that these dies were expensive and prized, leading to their extended use. This example exhibits a fascinating die break along Arethusa's forehead and extending over her eye, as well as a prominent die break amongst her hair. When you consider the exceptionally high relief of these dies (and their long period of use) it is no wonder these dies stressed and fractured. Some rough areas present in the fields, though these appear stable. All this considered, it is a wonderfully rendered example of this scarcely seen triple signature type. By applying his mark in triplicate, Kimon certainly proclaims his pride (deservedly so) in this exceptional piece of numismatic art.
