FRANCE. Dauphin's Second Birthday Gilt Cast Bronze Medal, 1603.
66.2 mm; 67.2 gms. Maz-639; Kress-556. Conjoined busts of King Henry IIII in armor and Queen Mary with a lace collar and a flower in her hair facing right. Legend HENR IIII R CHRIST MARIA AVGVSTA around. Dated 1603 on the truncation and signed G DVPRE F just below. Reverse: Standing figures of the King and Queen clasping hands over a child donning a helmet. An eagle descends between the couple to crown the child. Legend PROPAGO IMPERI around, and dated again in exergue. The reverse depicts the royal couple as Mars and Pallas Athena, with the naked child (the Dauphin) donning the helmet of Mars while resting one foot on a dolphin. This design and legend are seemingly taken from a coin of Plautilla of about AD 202, on which Roman Emperor Caracalla and his wife Plautilla are similarly posed. Heavily gilt bronze with the underlying metal evident on the higher parts of the design. A couple of very small scratches on the reverse. A loop has possibly been removed at twelve o'clock. A very impressive and attractive medal. EXTREMELY FINE.

Estimate: $200.00- $300.00
