FRANCE. 5 Franc, 1870-A. NGC MS-64.
Gad-739; KM-799.1; VG-3753. Last year for the type, struck on the eve of the disastrous (for France) Franco-Prussian War which commenced in earnest on July 19 of the year this coin was struck. From the very start of the war it was fairly clear the Germans would prevail, as they were much better organized and had superior armaments. Napoleon III himself was captured at the Battle of Sedan on September 2 of 1870. A terrific piece with loads of historical numismatic connections to this specific period. Nearly all white with highly reflective fields, fully original and quite solid for the grade. NGC MS-64.
