GERMANY. Mainz. Emrich Josef Appointed as Bishop of Worms Silver Medal, 1768. VERY FINE.
63.3 mm; 87.3 gms. Gartner-1093. Bust right in priestly robes, legend EMERIC IOSEPH D:G.A.EP.MOG.S.R.I.P.G.A.CAN.P.EL.EP.W. around. Signed A.S. below bust. Reverse: Virgin Mary reclining on wheel of Mainz, key in hand, while a crowned bird with the Mainz Wheel on one wing and a key on the other stands on a sack spilling out Bishop's regalia. Legend PROVIDENTIA CUM SORTE CLAVIS ET ROTAE (with chronogrammatic date 1768 embedded in legend) around and NOGVNTIAE 5 IUL. 1763 / WORMATIAE 1 MART 1768 in exergue. Again signed A.S above exerguial line. The edge is uninscribed. Emmerich Joseph von Breidbach zu Burresheim (1707-1774) was Archbishop-Elector of Mainz from 1763 until 1768 and Bishop of Worms from 1768 until his death in 1774. This impressive medal has accumulated a number of light edge abrasions and contact marks in the fields over the years, and its original finish has been lightened from polishing, but still remains quite appealing. VERY FINE.

Estimate: $200.00- $300.00
