GREAT BRITAIN. Cromwell and Aniello Gilt Cast Silver Medal, 1658. VERY FINE.
73.4 mm; 110.3 gms. cf. Eimer-1198. Bust of Cromwell facing slightly right with a laurel wreath being placed on his head by two Roman soldiers. Hand engraved in a bi-lobed cartouche below: OLIVIER CROMWEL / PROTECTOR V. ENGEL. / SCHOTL 1658 YRLAN. Reverse: Similarly composed design but showing Tommaso Aniello (known as Masaniello) being crowned by two fishermen, with the inscription MAS ANIELLO VISSCHER / CONINCK V. NAPELS / 16 47. Note that the spelling of Cromwell's first name is a variant of the example listed by Eimer. Cromwell and Aniello were populist near-contemporaries; one freeing citizens from tyrannical rule in England, and the other in Milan, Italy. The original pieces were made in Holland from two silver plates, one for the obverse and one for the reverse, mounted together with a silver bezel-like rim. This piece is a cast, no doubt very old and probably very nearly contemporary, of a completed medal. It is composed of one solid piece, not assembled from parts. This example was cast in silver, plated in brighter silver, and then gilt on the devices. VERY FINE.
Estimate: $400.00- $600.00
