ITALY. Anacona. AR Giulio, ND. Pope Leo X (Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici) (1513-21). NGC EF-40.
Berman-672; Muntoni-74, CNI-36. RARE. The son of Lorenzo de' Medici, the nepotism involved in his elevation to Pope and his subsequent selling of indulgences to anyone inclined to donate towards the reconstruction expenses of Saint Peter's Basilica set the stage for the Protestant Reformation. Launched by Martin Luther in 1517 as the "Ninety-Five Theses", repercussions from these early 16th century events are still felt to this very day. Historical significance aside, the coin offered here is a fantastic example of the coinage from the era, straight-graded and fully original. The obverse depicts Saint Peter and Paul above the House of Medici coat of arms. The reverse depicts a lion passant walking left. Immediately recognizable for type, the coin is marvelously preserved, well centered, and lightly toned. NGC EF-40.

From the Rockaway Collection.

Estimate: $500.00- $700.00
